My Take on Internal Family Systems (and How it Can Help You During a Life Quake)

My Take on Internal Family Systems (and How it Can Help You During a Life Quake)
Beth Hinze

Have you ever noticed when you've RSVPed to a party and one part of you says something like, "We have to go - we RSVPed," and another part of you says, "Let's stay home?"

Or maybe you've decided to lose a few pounds. One part of you says, "Why did you just eat that? Don't skip a workout!" while another part of you might whisper, "Go ahead and have a cookie. You've worked so hard...it's ok to skip a workout."

It can often feel like an internal tug of war.

This is a theory in therapy called Internal Family Systems (IFS) and focuses on the idea that our minds are all made up of several "parts" and "subparts."

In this episode, I explain IFS in its most basic form and as I see it. I'll also show you how just even a simple understanding of this theory has helped me, as well as many of my clients, in understanding why we may at times feel at odds within ourselves - whether it's in weight loss, with relationships, or even parenting.

(*Disclaimer! I am not IFS certified, and I don't claim to be! Reach out to a therapist or practitioner who is certified in Internal Family Systems for a deeper understanding.)
